Using Students Lives as Curriculum
People learn better when they feel like they have some control over what and how they learn. And when they feel that they can be successful with effort, they invest more in learning. We will look at many simple ways to give more control to learners and to allow them to have small successful experiences that can generate enthusiasm and excitement about language learning. Participants will actually experience many activities and can judge for themselves how enjoyable activities can be created and used effectively to motivate students. Murphey will go through a series of activities from least risky to more risky and ask participants to give feedback at all points in between. Some of the areas we will cover are how to make their lives the curriculum of your teaching. Student-centered teaching holds that students will learn more if teachers will lecture less and show students how to interact and learn with a variety of people in and out of the classroom. Simple exercises to more complex shadowing and conversational strategies will be demonstrated through songs and stories and movement.
